Why Surah An-Nas Revealed:

Surah Al-Falaq and later Surah An-Nas have been revealed at the same time. It is narrated in Musnad Ahmad Ibn Hanbal that a Jew practiced magic on the Prophet (peace be upon him). As a result, he fell ill. After descending, Gibrail informed that a Jew has enchanted, and by that, he enchanted is in the Ditch. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) sent a man and rescued him from the well. There were a few knots on it. As he recited these two surahs, he opened the knots immediately and he got out of bed completely healed.

It is narrated on the authority of Ayesha (may Allah be pleased with her) that if she cast a spell on the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), he would sometimes get lost and feel that he had done what he did not do.

One day he said to Hazrat Ayesha (RA): What is my disease, Allah has told me (In the dream) the two men came to me, and one sit next to the head and the other at the feet. The man sitting next to the head said to another man, What is his illness? Another said: He is bewitched. The first person asked: Who did the magic? The answer is that the Jewish ally, the hypocrite Labid Ibn Asam, performed magic.

Again the question is – what object did the magic? The answer is, in a comb. Again the question is, where is the comb? The answer is that the ‘Bir Zaroyan’ is covered under a rock in the cover of the date fruit. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) went to that well and said: This well has been shown to me in a dream. Then he brought the comb out of there.

According to Musnad Ahmad Ibn Hanbal, the illness of the Prophet (peace be upon him) lasted for six months.

Surah An-Nas Related Hadith and Benefit:

It is narrated on the authority of Hazrat Ayesha (may Allah be pleased with her) that when the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) went to bed every night, he would put both his hands together. Then he would blow with both hands and recite Surah Ikhlas, Surah Falaq, Surah Nas. Then he would move his body as much as possible. He started from the front of the head, face, and body. He did this three times. (Sahih Bukhari)

It is Sunnat to recite Surah Ikhlas, Surah Falaq, and Surah Nas three times after the obligatory prayers at Fajr and Maghrib. These three Surahs should be recited once after performing the other obligatory prayers. (Abu Dawood Ha: 1383)

If Surah Nas is recited, one can be protected from the evil and magic of Satan. It has been narrated in the hadith, “Whoever recites Surah Al-Ikhlas and these two Surahs (Surah Falaq and Surah An-Nas) morning and evening will be safe from all dangers.” (Jame Tirmidhi, Hadith: 2903)

It is narrated on the authority of Hazrat Uqbah Ibn Amer that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: Do you not know that no verse like the one that was revealed to me tonight has been seen or heard? And that is Qul Auju Bi Rabbil Falak and Qul Auju Bi Rabbil Nas. (Sahih Muslim: 614)
